How Long Should I Brush My Teeth?

This is a question that many already know the answer to. You have surely heard the long-honored mantra – brush your teeth for 2 minutes at a time two times per day! Have you ever wondered, though, why it is important to brush for at least 2 minutes at a time? What makes 2 minutes the right amount of time?

While 2 minutes is the length of time to brush your teeth that is officially recognized by the American Dental Association, the truth is that there are dental professionals out there who recommend you brush your teeth for even longer. Some recommendations estimate that you should brush your teeth for up to 3 to 4 minutes. Generally speaking, 2 minutes is roughly the lowest estimate of time given among dental professionals.

The longer you brush your teeth, of course, the more plaque you will remove. For example, some studies have shown that brushing your teeth for only 45 seconds removed 26% less plaque than brushing your teeth for a full 2 minutes. In order to remove harmful plaque and bacteria from your mouth, brushing for at least 2 minutes is necessary.

If two minutes seem to last forever while you’re brushing your teeth, try focusing on being thorough in your tooth brushing. Are you cleaning all surfaces of your teeth? Are you brushing near your gum line? Are you taking the time to clean your gums, the insides of your cheeks, and your tongue as well? When you make sure you’re cleaning your mouth thoroughly and properly 2 minutes can pass in no time!
