What is a root canal?
A root canal is a procedure to replace infected pulp in the root of a tooth with an inert material.
Inside your tooth, beneath the white enamel and a hard layer called dentin, is a soft tissue called pulp. This tissue contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue which help grow the root of your tooth during its development. Once a tooth’s nerve has declined to a certain point, it may be necessary to remove the nerve to protect you from pain, swelling, and infection.
A fully developed tooth can survive without the pulp because the tooth continues to be nourished by the tissues surrounding it. Removing the infected nerve will allow you to have healthier teeth and get rid of any pain associated with that tooth.
