How Can I Keep My Children Interested In Brushing Their Teeth?

Any Gresham parent knows how difficult it can be to convince a child to do something they don’t want to do. At McKeel Family Dentistry, we aim to help Gresham families know how to handle dental care needs at home as well. Here are a few tips to keep your children interested in brushing their teeth.

Start Early And Set An Example

Things go easier down the line if you get your child accustomed to cleaning their teeth early. Of course, before they’re brushing their teeth on their own you should be helping. This starts even before they grow their first tooth. You should wipe down a baby’s gums with a soft, damp cloth every night. When teeth grow in, begin brushing, and when teeth begin to touch, begin flossing. Set an example for your children to follow. Children mimic their parents, so parents who regular brush and floss will have children who are likely to follow that example.

Keep Time – But Make It Fun!

Another way to help your children brush properly is to make sure they brush for the full two minutes by measuring out that time in a fun way. You can get a fun little egg timer, such as one that has colorful sand or a funny shape, so they can have a visual cue. You can also try to measure out the time by playing their favorite song!

Offer Incentives

Another trick that Gresham parents can try is to offer incentives. Gresham parents can start a sticker sheet and give your child a gold star or other fun sticker every time they brush their teeth. Other incentives make it fun, too – such as picking a movie for the family to watch or staying up a few minutes later one night.
